Plover Cove Golf Club: Transforming Hong Kong’s Landscape
Below are excerpts from an article that originally appeared in Golf Industry Asia.
Plover Cove Golf Club (PCGC) is set to redefine the Shuen Wan landfill in Hong Kong’s New Territories. As the first full golf course on privately owned reclaimed land in the city, this visionary project will transform up to 53 hectares of restored landfill into a stunning Par 71 championship golf course. Spanning over 6,600 yards and featuring 18 holes, this ambitious development comes with a total investment of up to HK$4.5 billion (USD $578 million).
The collaboration between PCGC, Fry/Straka Global Golf Course Design, Turfgrass®, and Flagstick Golf Course Construction Management showcases a commitment to sustainable development and expert design. The course will utilize advanced construction techniques, including high-tech drainage and bunker systems, precision sand capping, and links-style rolling fairways to enhance both playability and drainage efficiency with most notable features include the latest Zoysia grasses and a sub-surface moisture management system, technologies found at premier clubs. These innovations aim to ensure that PCGC offers the best-conditioned course in the region, capable of withstanding local extreme weather conditions for an enjoyable year-round experience.
“Plover Cove Golf Club is a groundbreaking golf course that represents a new standard in both design and conditioning, positioning itself among the finest courses in the world. Transforming this once-overlooked parcel of land into a remarkable golfing destination underscores our commitment to preserving Hong Kong's status as a premier global hub.” said Dean Nelson, General Manager of PCGC. With extensive experience in golf and private clubs throughout Hong Kong and the Middle East, he emphasized the project’s role in preserving Hong Kong's status as a global hub.
PCGC will also celebrate the natural beauty surrounding it, particularly two rare Incense trees (Aquilaria sinensis). These trees not only enhance the landscape but also symbolize the club’s commitment to conservation. Classified as a National Level 2 protected species in Hong Kong and Mainland China, and listed as Near Threatened under the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance, these trees showcase PCGC's dedication to environmental sustainability. The club is also taking steps to protect local species, such as the Collared Crow and the Black Kite, by designating a 1.2-hectare area for their habitat.
In terms of sustainability, PCGC will feature a cutting-edge rainwater harvesting system. This system will capture and store rainwater for irrigation, reducing reliance on grid-sourced water. An advanced irrigation system equipped with automated sensors will ensure efficient water usage by precisely controlling watering schedules.
